What do YOU have to say about sexual assault at Oxy?

This Monday through Wednesday (March 18-20) Alliance for Autonomy is organizing a COMMUNITY ART PROJECT in the quad. We will provide the art supplies for you to express your thoughts through words, drawings, collage or otherwise. All are welcome to participate. Finished art will be displayed in the quad.

What ideas, feelings, questions, or concerns do you want to share? You can add anything, but PLEASE be respectful and considerate!

Hope to see you there! Bring your opinions and creativity!

We hope you’ll join the chorus of voices on Occidental’s campus to address sexual assault issues. Thank you to the Alliance for Autonomy for designing and organizing this event!

As a concerned parent and gun rights activist, I applaud you for your efforts. Unless a real spotllight is placed on campus sex crimes, nothing will change. While you are offering an avenue for victims to speak out, consider also offering various options for them to fight back. In states around the country, students are asking for the right to prevent crime by learning, preparing and exercising their rights to self-defense (not only with fireams). While you are activists against college, prosecutorial and legislative inaction, consider being agents for individual resistance ON CAMPUS!

Society is still preaching a passive “victimhood” mentality to young women. Criminolgists and sociologists are continuing to find in studies that those who offer real resistance, whether with firearms or other weapons, greatly reduce serious injury, while the “successful completion” of the rape may be reduced by more than half. These studies also point out that from 75-90% of firearm resistance is performed with actually firing a single round!

While it is probably a difficult political choice to offer these alternatives on a college campus, the area you call home for four years has become more and more like a bad inner city neighborhood. While you agitate for change, encourage your sisters and gay friends to have CHOICES for them to take other action. Every victim is a tragedy, failure to act is the second crime, knowing you could have and should have is creating another victim. Remember, The knowledge that students are learning and arming themselves will create a deterent for all students and faculty, armed or not.

God Bless you in your work, Bill Moore
